Today was my first shift of the Olympics...I arrived at the Olympic Village at 7:00...all the workforce enters from the same spot...bags are scanned and you have to pass through a metal detector...just like at the airport...once through there, you head to the sign in room where they give a lunch ticket and a sticker for your shift card...apparently every three shifts you work you get a little gift.
Next stop is the doping control station, where I was teamed up with a DCO (doping control officer) and we set off to find an athlete to test...no luck locating her however, nor did we have any luck with the two subsequent athletes we were looking for...we did however get a great look of the village - our credentials give us unrestricted access so we got to go into the residences, the athlete dining hall (which is quite a bit better than the workforce one) the entertainment lounges...the whole thing is quite impressive...all the residences have their country's flag hanging from them and some of the views are spectacular...hopefully I will get some pictures the next time I am there, but when I pulled out my camera today, the battery was dead...
I met some great people today - many of the DCO's are from different countries like South Africa, Scotland, New Zealand...and some are from our part of the country also...
By the end of my shift I felt as though I had walked about a marathon...but it was likely more like 10K...when I got home I immediately headed for the bathtub for a soak...sleep likely won't be a problem tonight!!!
